The Moss Terrarium Project...
From a distance moss can resemble an uninteresting dense green mat. Up close, moss are incredibly diverse and quite beautiful. One way to enjoy this beauty is by creating a terrarium filled with moss. Caring for this tiny plant ecosystem will surely tune your eye to the wonder of these smallest of land plants.
Step one: find mossYou have two options for this first step: Purchasing or Gathering.
1. Buying from a reputable source online is the easiest and safest, of course it costs. On the left hand side of this page you will find a few options. 2. Gather your own moss. Many mosses found in the city scape are unwanted and you should find no complaints from neighbors as you scrape the sidewalk or windowsill of this unwanted plant. However if you choose to look for moss in a more natural setting it is important you are familiar with the ethics of wild harvesting of plants as well as the specific laws of the property. See this link for more information on harvesting: Moss harvesting in the PNW. Step two: assemble materials
Step three:Place the rocks at the base of your chosen glass enclosure to ensure good drainage. Add a layer of the soil medium, and begin arranging the bits of moss on top of that. Placing the moss in an interesting and aesthetically appealing pattern is this most difficult part of this process.
