The moss lawn project...
Moss in lawns has long been viewed as a problem, and there is an entire industry built around treating this problem. However, what if moss was not considered a problem but a potential landscaping product and lawn replacement?
Step one: decide on designThere are two routes you can choose to take:
Step two: obtain mossYou have two options for this first step: Purchasing or Gathering.
Next assemble the moss. It is helpful to lay out the moss you have obtained and arrange it before planting. This allows you to move plants around before you commit to a certain location.
Step three: PlantThe area I was interested in planting is below a maple tree (seen in the upper left hand corner) and at the intersection of a garden bed and lawn of grass.
After exposing the soil and removing all the weeds as precisely as possible, I simply lay the mats of moss down. Gently pressing them into the soil to ensure their rhizoids (rootlike structures) had contact with the soil. Placing the garden hose nozzle onto the mist setting a spent several minutes soaking with new moss garden. It was an especially dry week when I put this garden in and so made sure to mist every day or so as the moss looked dry. |
